Jardim do Mar, Madeira Island

Jardim do Mar is a small parish located in the municipality of Calheta on the south coast of Madeira Island, south-west of the capital. While it initially depended upon the parishes of Prazeres and Paúl do Mar, it gained, however, its independence during the eighteenth century. The parish has the privilege of having an excellent climate, with abundant sunshine throughout the year overlooking and surrounded by different landscapes such as the mountains and the ocean. It is a must-see for the beauty of its natural environment as well as the manner in which it preserves the tranquillity of old times, which can be observed in the typical narrow streets (alleyways) and at the look of the low houses with chimneys of different kinds.

This parish is internationally renowned for having access to the best surfing waves in Madeira.
